Summary

Céline is the mother of a little boy, Iago. By conventional standards, he is ‘disabled’. But to her, he is simply extraordinary. Tania, who shares the same genetic condition as this child, is a singer. At thirty, she would like to experience love. Eva is an actress. She shares a passion for the stage with the other two. Through theatre and live music, these three women draw us into the parallel world of disability. Pursued by institutional violence and the demand for normality, they resist and throw themselves into the pursuit of a utopia. What if a world free from exclusion were within the reach of our imagination?

There was a one-in-twenty-two-thousand chance that Iago would have Williams-Beuren syndrome. His mum cherishes that chance, as she lives day-to-day with a child of a different intelligence, who is passionate about mechanics and possesses unrivalled social skills. Yet the school remains adamant: Iago must be taken out of mainstream education and sent to a special school. But they haven’t reckoned with the determination of this modern-day Amazonian mother, who is prepared to do anything to ensure her child has the right to exist just as he is, because he is perfect just as he is.

Mirroring the director’s daily life, the theatricality of Chance is rock ’n’ roll, brimming with audacity and energy. The female trio moves through an intergalactic setting, arming themselves with humour and poetry to transcend reality and say, on stage, what cannot be said in life. From the joy of motherhood to the anxiety of a far-right society where prenatal genetic testing is mandatory, Céline Beigbeder takes us on a joyful marathon, with the hope of a less restrictive and more inclusive society at the finish line.

Chance, as in “the chance to have an extraordinary child”, explains Céline Beigbeder, is above all a complete experience, filled with love, joy, struggles and a great deal of hope.

The inspiration for this story comes from a news item in Germany: one day, a father in Berlin started wearing dresses out of solidarity with his son, who wanted to dress only in that way. Working in perfect harmony, Clément Thirion and Marie Henry have crafted a colourful and joyful story about our relationship with social norms.
