Theater
Première Bruxelloise

Château Faible (The Pathetic Epic) is a celebration of cowardice, a silent and offbeat tale set in the Middle Ages. It is a world steeped in chivalric fantasy, yet one in which strength is held up to ridicule.

Summary

Two knights and a lady do their best to defend a castle that turns out to be rather fragile. Through one twist and turn after another, we discover the full extent of their cowardice. In this epic, the cartoonish duo are the antithesis of the heroes and heroines whose exploits have been recounted to us in so many tales and legends.

It is in a fragile world that Amber Kemp and Antoine Minne set the scene for their adventures. Here there is nothing flashy; we see two almost grotesque characters, fleeing towards danger. Humour plays a significant role in this production, which explores timeless forms of violence such as war, whilst always maintaining a comic and unifying tone. No one speaks except through onomatopoeia, for speaking out is an act of ultimate courage… yet here, no one is brave.

Château Faible (The Pathetic Epic) is a play driven by two detestable yet endearing characters, a subtly political work in that it has the intelligence to tackle, with a certain lightness, a profound question with contemporary resonance: where does our cowardice come from? Through laughter and all the tropes of the silent genre, Amber Kemp and Antoine Minne twist the faces of power with disarming irreverence.

The title sets the tone: a delightful play on words, a portmanteau of ‘multiverse’ and ‘sausage’. Parallel universes overlap in garish colours; a journey of discovery begins, inviting the player to take the plunge into a digital vortex: this is the story of a butcher’s daughter who rebels against a predetermined path.
