Summary

In a dilapidated cabaret, ravaged by fire, like post-war Berlin as filmed by Fassbinder, four performers put on a show for a non-existent audience. One might almost doubt that they are actually performing; perhaps these are dress rehearsals. A doctor, a journalist, a star and a policeman – four figures of authority – open up on a makeshift stage.

The author explores desire as a subversive force. Here, the cabaret represents the emanation of a marginal, rebellious force. Each character embodies a figure of power in the cabaret act; little by little, this figure implodes due to the intensity of their own feelings. Le Mauvais sort explores what desire represents in our societies, and how it disrupts the established order. In a space that seems to have withstood the end of the world, where black is rendered in various shades, textures and materials, the characters revisit a familiar musical repertoire, baring their hearts to us.

Le Mauvais sort is a work of speculative fiction. Desire is explored in a new dimension: its relationship to power and structures. Here, Eros is an agent of chaos in what it disrupts; the norm is overturned.

Rectum Crocodile sounds like the title of a quirky noir novel, but it is a fabulous tale in which the characters parade in magnificent finery. Thus, ghosts, humans and beasts mingle, trees speak, and together, this colourful crowd attempts to atone for a stubborn colonialism.
