Crocodile Rectum

Rectum Crocodile sounds like the title of a quirky noir novel, but it is a fabulous tale in which the characters parade in magnificent finery. Thus, ghosts, humans and beasts mingle, trees speak, and together, this colourful crowd attempts to atone for a stubborn colonialism.

Summary

In the heart of a colonial plantation, living and dead beings parade past and cross paths, guided by the mischievous and enigmatic voice of a child. Straight out of the Caribbean carnival imagination, various figures face us, reciting poems and incantations. Rectum Crocodile is a magical tale, a political and danced fable that attempts to exorcise the ghosts of white domination in the ‘New World’.

Marvin M’toumo, both director and costume designer, offers us a profound and feverish creation where movement blends with speech and the two merge into dance. The costumes, designed with care and precision, contribute to the marvellous dimension of this project. Like its creator, the piece sits at the intersection of several arts: dance, fashion, theatre and poetry, among others. It draws on both European theatrical conventions and Caribbean imagery, with history serving as the common thread linking them. Rectum Crocodile is a trial, set amidst a reign of flora and fauna. Set within a lush plantation, nature and humans question slavery, colonialism and all forms of domination. A polyphony of intersecting voices and bodies, this danced poem is a luminous and dazzling manifesto against discrimination and oppression.

Programmed in collaboration with the Kaaitheater, Rectum Crocodile is as much a roar as it is a manifesto. Dazzling and defiant in its magnificence, the piece summons the colonial past and calls it to account. It underscores the importance of continuing to collectively unearth this shared heritage.

Co-presented with the Kaaitheater.
