The Council of Villains

Alyssa Tzavaras

Theater
Première Bruxelloise

A multinational luxury brand, an eccentric artist and a lavish party. *Le Conseil des Méchants* is a dark fairy tale in which Alyssa Tzavaras delightfully combines the immense potential of theatrical machinery with a baroque world, very loosely inspired by Shakespeare’s *Macbeth*.

Summary

To celebrate its 80th anniversary, a multinational luxury brand decides to organise a lavish and exclusive gala. For the occasion, the company gives carte blanche to a cheeky and uninhibited artist, who devises an entire evening centred on a jungle theme. Having just arrived by private jet, whilst preparations are still underway, the company’s CEO announces to his circle of privileged guests, already in attendance, that his niece will succeed him – a move that greatly displeases his right-hand woman, Eva Pritsky. She then hatches a terrible vendetta.

With a certain humour, Alyssa Tzavaras explores how power and the desire for power lead to disaster. Accidents follow one after another, nature rumbles, trapping the protagonists in a huge warehouse. In this exuberant set design, which contrasts the artificial tropical setting of the party with the muffled presence of the snowstorm outside, the director plays with excess and overflow, revealing how the devastating forces of nature echo the megalomaniacal excess of these characters.

The Council of Villains is a satirical work, populated by predators and prey. The desire to dominate drives each of the characters, who are as wicked as they are complex. A fierce tale that invites us to examine what ambition provokes in us and around us, from catastrophe to chaos.
