Multi-Sausage

Carole Gantner

Theater

Première

The title sets the tone: a delightful play on words, a portmanteau of ‘multiverse’ and ‘sausage’. Parallel universes overlap in garish colours; a journey of discovery begins, inviting the player to take the plunge into a digital vortex: this is the story of a butcher’s daughter who rebels against a predetermined path.

Summary

Caro grew up in the countryside, amidst conversations laced with local dialect, not far from her mother’s refrigerated lorry. In her family, the butcher’s trade has been passed down from mother to daughter, a legacy she’s set to leave behind, dreaming of horizons beyond her beloved countryside. Thus begins the great journey of social mobility, on which she is accompanied, as in a zany remake of The Wizard of Oz, by Robin and a few crucial encounters: a burnt-out chameleon with sausage fingers, a cowgirl spaceship pilot, and a video that alternately represents her mother and her childhood friends.

Multi-Wourst sets out to offer a different take on the transition from one social class to another, not as an abandonment of one’s own or a headlong rush, but as an epic journey towards one’s own desires, with gratitude for what has been given to us. Collage, wordplay, poetry and offbeat humour are the language Carole Gantner has chosen to recount her odyssey. The actress’s various personas intersect on stage, realities are juxtaposed: she summons all the people she could have been and the one she wishes to become. With a unique and unapologetic aesthetic, blending pop culture and classical references, this production speaks less of a singular journey than of the circumstances that make it possible.

The young author plays with the boundaries between documentary and absurd fiction. Here, the individual journey is more of a pretext than a subject in itself, serving to explore the notions of privilege and social determinism.
