Summary

In the Jura, where Lucile grew up, folklore is very much alive. People dress up, sing, dance and savour local specialities. But when it comes to talking about life’s essential matters, it is the unspoken truths that take centre stage… Alone on stage, Lucile Charnier draws on her personal story – the silence surrounding a loved one’s cancer – to explore the role of denial within family dynamics. With a gentle, lucid and sensitive gaze, she reveals the unspeakable love hidden behind the taboo.

Blending performance, dance and song, L’appel des mutantes is a joyful and poetic work of autofiction where eras, places and people—both living and departed—intersect. From love left unsaid to unexpected forms of language, this one-woman show explores everything that plays out on the fringes of words when they have been silenced, whether out of modesty or tradition. It instils in us the urgency to reclaim new imaginaries so that we may view illness with gentleness and better integrate it into our lives.

In the run-up to the show, Lucile Charnier led workshops on the voice at the Institut Bordet, working with oncology patients. L’appel des mutantes is a tribute to their voices, which have blended together, resonating with the experience of cancer through beauty and joy. By playfully exploring our flight from reality and our little compromises with the real world, the writer, director and actress reminds us that, in the face of life’s difficulties – the fear of death, grief – there is always room for laughter.

The title sets the tone: a delightful play on words, a portmanteau of ‘multiverse’ and ‘sausage’. Parallel universes overlap in garish colours; a journey of discovery begins, inviting the player to take the plunge into a digital vortex: this is the story of a butcher’s daughter who rebels against a predetermined path.
