Combining subtle interplay with evocative and poetic imagery, Héloïse Meire’s new production unfolds like a graphic novel brought to the stage, immersing us in the daily lives of family carers

Dates and Times

Summary

A block of flats. Three windows lit up, night after night. Behind these windows lies the same reality: that of carers and those they care for. From snapshots of everyday life to dreamlike interludes, we meet a teenager and her mother, a woman and her father, and a male couple. As the seasons pass, their stories echo and intertwine in a visual and sensory tapestry where acts of care unfold in all their humanity.

Whilst the title Les Veilleuses evokes the little lamps designed to dispel the fear of the dark, it also reflects the reality of many people – mostly women – who care for a loved one outside any professional setting. For two years, the director led artistic workshops with these unsung heroes and heroines. With this production, she shines a spotlight on their experiences, their taboos, and the difficult yet transformative journey they have undertaken.

We are partnering with the Théâtre des Martyrs for the first time to present the latest production by the What’s Up company. Following the documentary style of *Is there life on Mars?*, Héloïse Meire has this time created a work of fiction based on the testimonies she has gathered. To recount and explore the dynamics of the relationship between carer and care recipient, she works on stage with expressive full-face masks, which serve as both valuable acting tools and powerful vehicles for the imagination.

Co-presented with the Théâtre des Martyrs.
