Nathalie Béasse makes her debut in Belgium at the Varia
horizons — Living the Theatre by Nathalie Béasse
In 2024, discover our special focus: "horizons — Inhabiting the Theatre by Nathalie Béasse." A selection of four plays being performed for the first time in Belgium, at the Studio and the Theatre.
For over 20 years, Nathalie Béasse’s productions have been widely acclaimed on the biggest stages in France and across Europe, from the Venice Biennale to the Avignon Festival. Until now, however, she had never had the opportunity to showcase her work in Belgium. That will now be rectified, with the spotlight we have decided to dedicate to her this season. Three weeks dedicated to her within the Varia programme, to take the time to explore the unique imagination of this major figure on the contemporary scene, and to engage in a special dialogue with her, centred on four productions from her repertoire.
A journey through collective mythologies and personal memories
Nathalie Béasse’s theatre is like an invitation to embark on a journey. Vast poetic panoramas, like a succession of moving tableaux in which wonder and magic are ever-present. Constantly seeking new intersections between the various languages and tools of the stage, she aims for a total theatre, where bodies, words, colours, objects and sounds interact on equal terms to compose unsettling, shifting stories and landscapes, like waking dreams. Resonating deep within us, these images speak directly to our subconscious and open our eyes to an infinite array of new perceptions, allowing each of us to chart our own path to understanding in complete freedom.
The group, the tribe, the forest, the constant intertwining of nature and our ways of life… From one performance to the next, Nathalie Béasse draws on recurring themes and motifs. Most often, she starts with fragments of life which, at first glance, may seem very simple, yet reveal the loneliness, the vertigo and the obstacles faced by a humanity grappling with its childhood dreams. An art of dance, of falling, of slipping and of repetition, in which flight cannot be conceived without collapse, momentum without fracture, and which builds a bridge between our great collective mythologies and our intimate memories.
Welcoming Nathalie Béasse also means welcoming her company: a group, a family that is constantly reshaped by chance encounters and those wonderful bonds of trust and loyalty that take shape on stage. Endearing faces and personalities as funny as they are moving, whom the director brings together above all on the basis of the desire they all share: to remain attuned to our hopes, our flaws, and all those tiny sparks of life that connect us to one another, so that we may chart a new horizon in our hearts.
